About our farm

My husband and I moved to the country to realize our dream of having a small homestead farm of our own. Although we both work outside the home we have been able to reach our goal of having the farm support itself. Farm life has allowed us to slow down our pace and prioritize what is really important in our lives by grounding us in God's creation. Growing our own chicken, pork and lamb provides us with healthy and great tasting meat. Working the soil rewards us with home grown fruits and vegetables. And the wool we harvest from our fiber animals gives us the ingredients for warm beautiful garments and allows me to express my creativity. We feel this is the perfect environment to raise our children. Helping with everyday chores teaches responsibility and hard work that is lacking in many children's lives today. Seeing the birth and death that occurs on a farm teaches our children to value and respect life in a way that cant be taught any other way. We have been incredibly blessed in our lives and with our two boys and two daughter trusted to us by God to raise in His love.

UPDATE (Jan 2005): Scott and I are in the process of adopting a baby girl from China. We can hardly wait to have this little girl in our arms but it will be several months yet. We have just completed our home study and hope to travel to China by the end of the year. This little girl will be our second daughter from China. To help cover expenses related to the adoption I have decided to go back to work full time until we bring her home. This has made me have to decide to give up much of my fiber business for the time being. It has been a hard decision to come to but for sanity reasons I know that it is necessary. I still do have some felt already made and will get individual pieces on my fiber for sale page as I can. I am hoping to still have my alpaca and icelandic fiber available for sale if I can get to skirting and washing it to have it processed. And I am hoping to still be able to do some teaching. All my other free time will have to be spent with family and caring for our fiber animals. I am looking forward to our spring lambs and am hoping that everything goes smoothly with our paperwork and we are able to have our new daughter here with our family for Christmas.

Update (end of Nov 2005): This has been a busy year with family and with farm and fiber. Time has gone very fast. We are still anxiously waiting for our referral from China. It didn't arrive in November so we are quite sure we wont be heading to China to bring our new daughter home by Christmas. We are very disappointed about not having her home by Christmas but take comfort from knowing God has this adoption in His hands. His timing is perfect and he has our daughter already picked out for our family. We cant wait to get some information and pictures of her, hopefully in December.

Update: December 2005 We have finally received our referral from China for our little girl. We are very very excited!! As I am writing this update on December 20 she is celebrating her first birthday today. We are sad to miss this and the whole day I have felt somewhat discontented - wondering if anyone in the orphanage sang happy birthday to her or acknowledged this special day for her in some way. Now that we know the little girl waiting there for us it makes it harder to be patient for our travel to get her.  Little Sarah is in our constant prayers for love and safety until we can bring her home - we hope in February.

This is Jin Ai Bei (Jin is her last name) born Dec 20,2004.

We will be naming her Sarah Aibei Selles when she comes home with us. She is from the same province as Trena - our 4 yr old, but a different orphanage. This picture was taken in July. What a cutie. When Trena first saw the picture of her new little sister - her first words were "hey - she has black hair like me, and she has dark eyes like me too".

Update: Feb 7, 2006 we head to china in just a few days - check out our blog if you would like  -  sellesinchina.blogspot.com  - to see how our travel is going. We arrive back home on the 26th of February.

Update: April 1, 2006 - our trip to China was successful - we are home safe with Sarah. She is wonderful and fitting in with our family well - we cant imagine it with out her now. Words can not really express but I praise God for all our blessings. Now that we have been home for a few weeks and back into our normal routine we are gearing up for our lambing season. We have 12 ewes that look to be pregnant and I have much preparation to get done yet before they arrive after the middle of April. My lambing jugs are set up temporarily where I store hay over the winter so I need to get those set up yet besides the normal spring activity of cleaning and fixing everything that could wait until winters cold weather has passed. Keep an eye out for our lamb pictures coming - I cant wait.
