Freshly sheared Icelandic fleeces
fall 2006- ALL
SOLD check back next fall/winter 2007 for
more
Now that the holidays are winding down I am finally done skirting and
organizing my fall shearing of Icelandic wool.
I am offering this wonderful wool for sale first as raw and then what I
have left I will wash and have processed into roving for my own use with
possibly some extra to sell. You can buy part or all of a fleece - even
mix and match. Just let me know how many ounces you would like. Cost
is $1 per ounce under 1 pound. Over 1 pound is $12 per pound (if you order
a pound or more it is $.75 per ounce). I do charge for shipping but there
is no charge for handling.

If you have never had the pleasure of working
with icelandic fiber you will be in for a treat. Icelandic sheep have a
dual coat with the longer coarser outer coat called the tog and the finer
undercoat called the thel. The two coats can be quite easily separated but
the outer coat is wool and not hair or kemp so the two coats can be used
together to make beautiful yarns. I am a hand spinner myself so my
pasture/sheep management is geared toward harvesting top quality wool from
my animals. One of my top breeding objectives for my flock is for soft
lustrous wool and most of my adult sheep still give amazingly soft
fleeces. And of course the lamb fleeces are 'to die for'. If you are new
to working with icelandic wool there are a few "tricks to the trade".
Check out my wool washing tips and feel
free to ask me any questions you may have about washing, carding, blending
and dyeing before you dig in.

Nikki -
gray moorit ewe. Her outer coat (tog) is a toffee colored brown and her
undercoat (thel) varies from almost white to a pale gray. Absolutely
beautiful. When spun this makes a beautiful tweed yarn. Very soft.

Susie Q -
this pretty moorit mouflon girl gives me beautiful lambs every year. She
has a pretty brown fleece with some silvering. Soft.

Iselle -
white ewe. Iselle carries spotting under her white pattern. Almost every
year she has given me a spotted lamb. When spotting is hiding under the
white pattern of an icelandic sheep the wool tends to be very white - and
Iselle is a ewe that has very very white wool. Very pretty and soft with
very good luster.

brown. It reminds me of dark chocolate. It is very pretty and quite soft.

Melly -
white ewe. Melly's wool this year is extremely nice and she grew lots of
it. Her lamb was still born this year so she was able to devote all her
energy into growing an incredible fleece.

Granger - moorit ram. This deep chestnut
colored fleece is quite impressive. Not quite as soft as my girls but
still very nice - definitely not coarse. Very pretty but quite a bit of
musky odor

Digory - black mouflon badgerface. This is a beautiful fleece and is
actually softer then some of my girls. Slight musky odor but really not
too bad. Most of this wool is creamy but with black wool peppered
throughout making it quite variegated which you cant see so much from the
sample picture I took.

Icelandic yarn is wonderful for many
projects and I have used it for mittens, purses, scarves, socks and
sweaters with very nice results. It is durable and beautiful and my main
breeding objective for my flock is soft wool. This wool also felts
wonderfully if you would like to try knitting or crochet to put in the
washing machine to full.
|
 |
I made this bag
a couple years ago from natural color icelandic wool that I spun into
yarn, crocheted and then fulled in the washing machine. This bag
measures 18 inches across and 17 inches deep and most times I have it
bulging and heavy. It still looks brand new even after much use.

Hand dyed braided roving |
|
I
now have some more braided roving available. I warn you though that
supplies wont last long - I have sold half before I was able to even post
it on my site here. I brought several of these braids with me to Michigan
Fiber Festival this past August and they were a huge hit. I had almost
sold out of them by the end of the day on Friday. I finally had
time to make more - each braid is individually dyed so even though I can
get them close when doing a batch - no two are exactly alike. The wool is
my Silver Ice blend and started out light gray before dyeing. This blend
contains about 60% white border leichester, 20% white mohair and 20% gray
mohair. Very nice shine. Lightly pre-draft this roving and it spins like a
dream. Each braid has about 3 ounces of wool.

Colors can vary slightly from the picture.
There are 16 braids in this picture from left to right - 3 red autumns, 3
light pinks, 1 dark purple, 3 light purples, 1 light blue, 2 teals, and 3
spring green.

Orchard Hill Rovings |
|
I don't have too much remaining from my 2006
batch of roving. Just one color of Icelandic roving and a little bit left
of a few of the blends. These gray rovings do very well over-dyed also. |
|
 |
|
These three batches of roving are real close in color with Silver Ice
(left) being the lightest, Pewter (middle) and the dark gray Icelandic
roving (right) being the darkest.
Silver Ice consists of 60% border leichester and 40% mohair. 13 bags
remaining.
Pewter consists of 40% icelandic, 40% mohair and 20% alpaca.
sold out
Icelandic consists of 100% Icelandic wool. sold out

Orchard Hill Icelandic Felting wool |
|
I have a few lots of hand dyed wool for
felting. Each strand of the braid has been dyed to consist of a wide
variety of tones and colors. This wool works great to embellish your
needle felting and wet felting projects. Icelandic wool is one of the
worlds easiest felting wools. Felting doesnt require a long of staple
length in the fiber as does spinning. Icelandic sheep are sheared twice a
year with the fall shearing being long, lustrous and beautiful. Spring
shearing was traditionally tossed out or used for garden mulch until
felting became so popular. I wash my spring shearing and have it run into
roving for me by the mill. Most of it I use for my own felting projects
but some times I have extra to sell. This wool is from my spring shearing.
Each braid contains approximately 3 ounces.
Let me know which lot you would like.

Square and Triangle
Looms
|
|
|
These two shawls were
made from squares and triangles wove on these looms and then sown
together. These beautiful looms are fun and easy to use. They are
made of solid wood with a tung oil finish to bring out the beauty
of the grain and are available in oak, ash or poplar. The square
loom weaves a 7 inch square and the triangle loom weaves a right
triangle with 7 inch sides. The shawls above use the square for
most of the shawl with the triangles across the top. The pieces
all sown together make one large triangle. It would be very easy
to also make a small blanket either with all squares or a
combination of squares and triangles. There is a lot of room for
creativity. Since the looms are small they are easy to set on your
lap to work them and are portable enough to take on travel. The
weave that is done of these looms is called a continuous weave. It
is done in such a way that while you are weaving one half of the
square or triangle the other half weaves itself. |

Handmade Felt |
|
This past summer I was looking at the vase
that hoIds my knitting needles and thought it would be neat to felt over
the glass. I started with one and had so much fun I ended up making a
dozen or so. They are quite pretty and I have a couple in my wool room of
different sizes organizing scissors, rulers, double pointed needles and
paint brushes. I have one on the dinning room table with a dried flower
arrangement in it. The extras I have are posted here. |

| 3) This vase tried my
patience trying to keep more control over the placement of the dyed
wool to give an impressionist view of a summer garden but I am very
happy with the results. Black on the bottom fades to warm summer
greens with purplish/pink flowers all around and topping off with
blue/sky colors. Embellished with silk. About 9.5 inches tall by 6
inches wide.
